Camp Kum-Ba-Ya expresses its primary mission to respond to God’s call to host spiritually enriching camps for children, youth & adults. The Billy Williams Lodge is central to that mission, serving as the dining hall, air-conditioned gathering room, administrative office, craft room, staff showers, and winter season dormitory. Camp Kum-Ba-Ya is embarking on a fundraising effort to reach our goal of raising $50,000 to repair and renovate the Billy Williams Lodge.

Why Do We Need a Campaign?

With a generous $4,000 gift from First Christian Church of Benton and a $14,000 draw from the permanent funds held by the West Area, Camp Kum-Ba-Ya began a project this spring to replace the old siding on the Billy Williams Lodge. With the 2020 summer camp season being virtual, this was an ideal time to undertake this essential upgrade to the lodge. However, the contractors working on the siding discovered that the building had significant black mold problems in the outside walls of the restrooms, which were built decades ago without mold-resistant drywall.

Completing the siding project now requires remediating the mold and renovating both restrooms. The funds raised will also afford the opportunity to replace the aging HVAC system. Any funds raised in excess of the project goals will be put in the Camp Revamp fund for future infrastructure projects. All of this will help Kum-Ba-Ya continue to be a healthy, safe, and welcoming environment for staff and guests, and it will preserve the Billy Williams Lodge for another generation of campers.

Regional Partners

The Christian Church in Kentucky and the West Area are partners in this effort. The region has opened a line of credit with Disciples Church Extension Fund and will use Camp Endowment funds to match up to $25,000 in funds raised. This is a tremendous opportunity to double the effect of your gift. Please join the West Area and the Christian Church in Kentucky in preserving our lodge for future generations.

Funds Raised

  • REMEDIATE mold found in the outside walls of the shower rooms;
  • RESTORE women’s and men’s restrooms and shower rooms with new sheetrock and upgraded, ADA compliant fixtures; and
  • REPLACE the HVAC system that has served ten years beyond expectations.
