Ministry Story of Walton Christian Church

In 1990, Al Meyer visited Nicaragua with his friend and pastor Wendell Metty for the first time. They experienced a country torn apart from a decade of war and an uncertain future. Back home in Cincinnati, Al & Wendell decided to put their faith into action. So they established a non-profit (Matthew 25 Ministries) designed to provide food, medical, and educational needs in the name of Christ to Nicaraguan children.

After a few years, Matthew 25 expanded to other countries. It was then that Al and his wife Charlene decided to continue ministry in Nicaragua as their sole focus. So they started the Tin Roof Foundation.  For the last 25 years, Tin Roof has worked faithfully with partner ministry organizations in Nicaragua providing essential needs in the name of Christ.

Along the way, Walton Christian Church and Tin Roof connected. And over the last decade, Tin Roof has provided WCC with a direct ministry opening out into the larger world. Through prayer, travel, partnership, student sponsorship, and friendship, we’ve been able to see and experience God’s hand at work in countless lives. We’re  extremely grateful for the gift of love Tin Roof has provided. And we’re extremely grateful for relationships developed over the years with Nicaraguan sisters and brothers.

The last four months have been a very difficult time for Nicaragua. After a decade of relative stability, political unrest pent up over recent years has boiled over. Over 300 folks have been killed. Neighborhoods have been destroyed. Fear is heavy and prevalent. And once again, the country’s future is uncertain.

We pray for peace in the current situation. We pray that the words of Micah will prevail: “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what GOD is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.” We pray  for a way forward that allows needed changes for a just society and economy.

A six month Crisis Contingency Plan has been developed by Tin Roof (and Rayo De Sol, a ministry partner) to help sustain food, water, medical, and income generation for folks directly affected by the current chaos.
