Food for Thought (that risks a bit of indigestion)

John Pavlovitz is a Christian pastor and author, whose writings come from what many would consider a more liberal theology and ideology.  I see his posts frequently on Facebook so I am sure many of you are familiar with his writings, whether you agree with what he says or not, or fall somewhere in between…thinking he has some good ideas but also thinking “I’m not buying it.”  I follow him and his writings.

Recently, I found an article John had written about today’s church and why he thinks people are leaving the church.  It piqued my interest so I thought I would share it with you.  It’s not one of his more recent articles and it may seem a bit harsh to some.  It is not a warm and fuzzy article, but I think what he points out is still worth considering today.

In the past few months, I have had the joy of working with congregations who are looking for pastors for their congregations.  And, through many a conversation with search committees, pastors, and others involved in the lives of our congregations, I have found that many of these good church folks are struggling more and more to understand who they are as church and how they can be most faithful to that which God is calling them to do, in this time and place, with the resources and gifts for ministry they have (there are a lot of gifts out there whether they talk about them or not!).  There’s a lot of discernment going on in our churches right now.  Please know that your regional staff recognizes this, and are here for you if you need our help to navigate these waters of uncertainty and change.

So, for some food for thought, take a look at what Rev. Pavlovitz has to say.  You may not agree with him, but at least it will give you something to think about and, hopefully, talk about.  And, remember with each change, with each challenge, there is an opportunity for growth and greater faithfulness.  God will be with us, and God will not fail us!
